September 29, 2008 (Tokyo, Japan)—Hitachi Displays, Ltd. (President: Yoshiyuki Imoto), headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and Acrodea, Inc. (CEO and President: Junya Tsutsumi), headquartered in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, announced today an agreement to conduct joint marketing for the development of advanced user interfaces employing touchscreens to mobile phones, PDAs, and various devices.
In recent years, interfaces employing touchscreens have been attracting attention for their implementations in data terminals, foremost among them being mobile phones. Meeting the rising demand for touchscreens, Hitachi Displays developed in 2008 an integrated touchscreen display device that integrates a touch panel and liquid crystal display. To date, Acrodea pursued the development of interfaces that use advanced input devices, such as solutions employing sensory input sensors, with the mobile-telephone user interface platform VIVID UI as a foundation.
For the near future, Hitachi Displays and Acrodea—by leveraging their expertise and networks of contacts—intend to cooperate in making proposals for touchscreen interfaces to mobile telephone manufacturers and other makers of various devices, and in promoting widespread adoption of touchscreen systems.
About VIVID UI
VIVID UI is a user interface platform developed by Acrodea, and represents innovative middleware that can integrate various types of multimedia content, such as still pictures, 3D graphics, animation effects, and video. VIVID UI enables mobile phones that can be readily customized with graphically enhanced menus and standby screens to match the preferences of each user. The VIVID UI authoring tool incorporates features for creating menu transitions through a visual context, as well as for menu content emulation. By using this tool, handset manufacturers and content providers can easily create compatible content with a wealth of expression.
About Hitachi Displays, Ltd.
Hitachi Displays, Ltd., was established in Oct. 2002, as a small-to-medium sized LCD specialty manufacturer. The proprietary IPS technology is a TFT liquid crystal technology of the In-Plane-Switching method with behaviors that differ from those of typical TFT liquid crystals of the TN or other methods. The technology was released in 1995 and commercialized in 1996 by Hitachi, Ltd., and subsequently has evolved through Super-IPS, Advanced-Super IPS to IPS-Pro. Because liquid crystal molecules spin around on a plane parallel to a TFT substrate in the In-Plane-Switching mode and the movement of these molecules is very simple, IPS technology features a wide viewing angle, excellent color reproducibility, and high response speeds in halftone processing. The IPS technology has significantly resolved the viewing angle issues of liquid crystals, without using viewing angle compensation films that affect the contrast and color tone depending on the viewing angle, and delivers images that are “beautiful, even when viewed from an angle.â€
